Walmington-on-Sea has become so familiar from Dad’s Army that it is quite a shock to think that it is not a real place. In fact the outside filming locations were almost all situated well inland and away from the south coast – in and around Thetford in Norfolk.

However, Jimmy Perry and David Croft created such a fully realised world through their writing and production that Paul Carpenter of the Dad’s Army Appreciation Society was able, though painstaking research, to create a map of Walmington-on-Sea.
