Dads Army We Know Our Onions

50 Moments That Made Dad’s Army: #4 Interrogation

Interrogation

We’re counting down towards the 50th anniversary of Dads Army but before we get there, there are a few more anniversaries along the way, and today is one of them! It was exactly 45 years ago today that We Know Our Onions was first seen on our screens.

This episode from series 6 was a bit of a throw-back to the early days, with the intrepid Walmington-on-Sea platoon going on an initiative test with predictably disastrous results.

I’ve talked about this episode before and I think that one of its best features is an outstanding performance from veteran actor Fulton Mackay. He would shortly become famous playing his own namesake in the prison comedy Porridge opposite Ronnie Barker. At the time this episode was made, however, he was still relatively unknown to audiences. Nevertheless he gave a brilliant performance opposite Jones’s belligerent and Wilson’s insouciance and this clip captures the moment when he realises just what he is up against.
