50 Moments That Made Dad’s Army: #22 Ladies of Walmington

It’s time to hear from the ladies of Walmington – that redoubtable band of women who get up each morning, dress and go out to queue for hours for a few miserable slices of corned-beef. Not that they don’t have a few tricks up their sleeve to get a little bit of off-ration (knowing wink).

The episode The Armoured Might of Lance Corporal Jones is one I’ve included in my ten most important Dad’s Army episodes as it introduces a number of important elements of the series. But the moment I’ve chosen has very little to do with that. It simply shows us a little of the day-to-day lives (and maybe loves) of Corporal Jones and his customers.

From the vampish Mrs Fox, the waspish Mrs Yeatman to the gushing Miss Meadows every one of them is trying to get a bit on the side with varying degrees of subtlety and Raymond just won’t hurry-up with the brawn.

50 Moments that made Dad’s Army is a series of blog posts each focusing on one moment that helped define the popular comedy series. There will be one post for each of the 50 days leading-up to the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast of the first episode of the series on 31st July 1968. 50 Moments that Made Dad’s Army is brought to you by walmington-on-line.co.uk and copyright of all video clips belongs to the BBC.
