Pikey's Picture Palace

Frank the cinema-goerIt is no secret that young Frank Pike is potty about the cinema. There isn’t a film shown since 1935 that he hasn’t seen or won’t tell you about.

We cannot show all those films that young Frank has watched over the years - but we do have a collection of Dad’s Army related video clips for you to enjoy.

Just remember to stand for the National Anthem at the end.

Documentaries

England on Film: Focussing on the north-east of England this documentary features fascinating period footage of the second world war showing civil defence preparations, the effects of bombing, and training by the Home Guard. A shortened version of the programme can be seen here, and more information and footage can be found at the BBC’s England on Film site.

After they were famous: On 3rd December 2002 ITV broadcast a programme in their series ‘After they were famous’ featuring Dad’s Army stalwart Bill Pertwee. See Chief Warden Hodges as he is  today and discover how Dad’s Army lives on for him twenty-five years after the last episode.

The Sitcom Story: is a three part BBC programme hosted by Dawn French looking at the history of the sitcom on British TV. Naturally Dad’s Army as one of the most popular British sitcoms had a special place. Amongst others Bill Pertwee, Clive Dunn and Ian Lavender were interviewed about the programme.

Britain’s Best Sitcom: Phill Jupitus presents the case for Dad’s Army as the best sitcom. Part of a major public vote to find the country’s favourite sitcom, Dad’s Army was voted into the top-ten of British situation comedies and eventually finished in fourth place trailing behind more recent programmes: Only Fools & Horses, Blackadder and The Vicar of Dibley (yes, really!). An excellent programme featuring Frank Williams.

Dad’s Army Rarities

The Battle of Godfrey’s Cottage: for over thirty years five episodes from the second series were lost from the BBC archive. In 2001 two episodes, The Battle of Godfrey’s Cottage and Operation Kilt were found in the most unlikely of circumstances (read the full story here). Although broadcast in the UK neither episode has yet received general video release. While we’re waiting here is a short clip from The Battle of Godfrey’s Cottage.

Bits and Pieces

Clive Dunn as Charlie Quick

Grandad: after Dad’s Army had finished Clive Dunn, looking for a new project, approached Bob Block the writer of long-running children’s show Rentaghost. Between them they came up with Grandad a children’s programme centred on Charlie Quick, the doddery but mischievous caretaker of a municipal hall. The character of Quick owed much to Cpl Jones, employing similar verbal mistakes and mannerisms. The humour was very visual and slapstick and there were some nice supporting performances. The programme ran to 4 series. Here you can see the edited highlights of an episode from the last series, in 1983, in which Clive Dunn is accompanied by another Dad’s Army stalwart - Pamella Cundell
