50 Moments That Made Dad’s Army: #19 Piping the Haggis

We’ve reached day 19 and are exactly a month away from the 50th anniversary of Dad’s Army. But today is also an anniversary – it was exactly 46 years ago today that the episode If the Cap Fits was recorded.

There is so much to enjoy about this episode – Mainwaring’s slideshow with the ‘vicar’s clicker’, Frazer’s rebellion and his subsequent persecution of Jones and Wilson once he has temporary control of the platoon.

But for me the finest moment is the closing scene. For a while it looks as though Mainwaring will be humiliated in-front of top-brass.  His miraculous escape (courtesy of a clearly disappointing honeymoon) is nothing short of genius, both in its writing and acting.
