50 Moments That Made Dad’s Army: #14 Clippy

Captain Mainwaring is a pompous man who has a strong sense of what is right and wrong.

In the episode A Soldier’s Farewell, first aired in October 1972,  the platoon go on a cinema trip and return home on the late night bus. The men are in party mood and so both Mainwaring’s dignity and the reputation of his unit come under threat.

With Wilson and the men singing ribald songs and warden Hodges making lewd remarks to the clippy, the best thing Mainwaring can do is stand up and be counted – even if that does mean being knocked back down again.

A lovely moment in which Mainwaring struggles to impose his standards on the platoon – you can feel his rising indignation as it all goes wrong.
